4 miles through Pleaseant Valley in 30:46 (7:41/mile)

Feeling pretty good today. I ran across an acquaintance from college days. She was a senior when I was a freshman, and she was going back to school, so was 30 at the time. It took a few seconds to recognize her, but we stopped and chatted for a few minutes. Beautiful sunny day, cool, but not freezing.

10 miles on Vickory in 1:18:43 (7:52/mile)

This was the longest run I've done in quite a while. I hate the fact that 10 miles is considered a long run for me right now. Other than that, though, I was pretty happy with how things went. The knee did pretty well, energy was OK, nothing to complain about. I see the first mile was unusually slow. Everything else was about normal, though.

I also cleared 30 miles for the week, the most in some time. Since the 3rd week of October

12 miles on Vickory in 1:37:48 (8:09/mile)

4 days in a row, a pretty good accomplishment for me. That made this run all the more difficult, though. I was tired from the get go. At four miles I felt like I could stop right then. The plan was to run 10, but if I was feeling good I'd go for 12. But of course, I really wanted to do 12, so I did. I figured it didn't matter how slowly I ran, as long as I got the miles in.

I waited until 2 to run, hoping it would warm up just a tad more. I did get up near 40, but the run was long enough it was getting cold again, and darker, by the end.

It's funny how the legs get locked into a certain speed. I think that was also part of my race problem, I basiclly only ran on the TM at 7:30 pace for two weeks before the race(that's their max setting).

Good improvement, You're going to be back up to full speed soon!

Beautiful, sunny day, low 40s. I wore shorts, and took of the jacket at 3 miles.

My left achilles has been a little sore and tight since last night. Not sure where that came from since I didn't run yesterday. It was barely noticeable during the run today, but did make me forget about the knee.

I meant to go extra easy today so I would have the option of running long tomorrow instead of Saturday, but I'm afraid 7:43 pace is probably a little too fast for that. I don't know, we'll see how I feel tomorrow.

16 miles on Vickory in 2:09:38 ()

We're heading to Disneyland this weekend, so I moved the long run up to mid-week this week. That way I only have about 1 1/2 weeks between long runs at both ends.

This was one of those runs where, 3 miles into it I was wondering how I was going to make 16 miles. I decided as long as I was not already dragging slower than 8 I should be OK, it would just be tough.

I forgot my Garmin at work and seemed to miss every other mile mark most of the time. Pretty consistenly decent the first half. There are some big hills in the second half that slowed me way down. The fourth 2-mile block was probably faster than that as it is the main downhill. I stopped for a potty break and forgot to restart my watch I guess.

Exhausting run. It's been several weeks since my last long run and I felt it. I wanted to go 18, but decided there was no value in grinding through .8 more miles on legs that were already sapped.

Hey Scott! Are you planning on doing Tacoma City Marathon?

From DLTheo on Wed, Mar 06, 2013 at 23:26:38 from 76.28.161.119

Hey Carl, long time no see!

Yes, I am planning on doing Tacoma, though training isn't going great. Right now my only goal is to finish. If, in the next few weeks, a miracle happens I may upgrade that to a time goal.

How about you?

From Carl on Fri, Mar 08, 2013 at 04:32:14 from 216.161.240.70

I haven't registered yet, but plan to do it. Training has been sporadic this year, but I'm going to get more consistent now.

I've been doing the Resolution Run Series. You are right about me being in the least-competitive age group. So far, I've taken 2nd place, 2nd place, and 5th place for the individual races, however; as a series competitor, I've taken 1st place in all three!

The 20 miler is comming up in a couple of weeks. I've been using the series as motivation to get training for Tacoma City Marathon.

From I Just Run on Fri, Mar 08, 2013 at 08:16:55 from 67.79.11.242

So that's what you're supposed to do when your legs are "sapped"? I seem to always just keep going and torture myself.

Glad to see you blogging a little and thanks for the encouragement!

From derhammer on Fri, Mar 08, 2013 at 09:25:10 from 64.245.52.2

I can relate - my first 18 miler after 6 months of doing nothing more than 12 miles was brutal. It will all come back though.

From DLTheo on Fri, Mar 08, 2013 at 11:47:06 from 76.28.161.119

@Carl - so the series is serving the purpose for which it was created. You've already earned the prize, so now you can run the 20 miler as a marathon simulation. First 10 easy, 2nd 10 at goal pace.

@IJR - it depends on the goal of the run. Sometimes it is good to keep pushing through. However, in the moment it was easy to justify stopping :)

@derhammer - Yeah, I had done some 16 milers, but it had been several weeks, and since then nothing more than 10, just a few days before. I am hoping next week 19 will go much more smoothly.

From DLTheo on Mon, Mar 25, 2013 at 12:59:54 from 76.28.161.119

Yes, I'll be running. I don't expect much out of myself other than finishing at this point, though. I didn't know about the special Maniac medals. That will be fun.

From rAtTLeTrAp on Mon, Mar 25, 2013 at 13:13:08 from 24.17.146.10

Cool. My only serious goal is to beat my slowest marathon time (3:53). If my training goes well in the next few weeks I may shoot for a BQ in the Old Farts bracket (3:25). Either way, the Maniac aspect of this race will make it really fun. I think there will also be a special finishers tent for us with beverages etc.

Much better than the last couple long runs. I actually felt pretty good the whole time. The weather didn't quite cooperated. It was dry for 10 miles, then I got caught in a downpour. I managed to resist the temptation to call it quits early when I stopped off at home briefly at 12 miles.

Ran down Yakima to Wright park, used the bathroom and then ran back.

My goal on these long runs lately has been to run an easy, relaxed pace the first 2/3 or so and then just focus on trying to keep each of the last miles under 8, for as long as I can. Last week I managed to stay close to 8 through mile 17, then I ran out of gas and had to just jog the last 2.

I figured I should be able to do the same this week through 19, since that is how far I ran two weeks ago. It went better than expected. In fact, each of my long runs has gotten easier even as they have gotten longer. That's typical.

I managed to keep my average pace under 8 through 16, and then each individual mile under 8 was actually not that hard. The last two I even sped up a little bit. My knee didn't give me any problems either.

Did you get some maniac gear yet? If you get one of these you can believe the warning about them running small. I got a large and had to trade it in for an XL.

Woah this run was hard. Well, the last 2 miles was hard. I did my usual thing of just trying to keep around 8/mile through 16 or so, then focus on each mile being faster than 8. I made it to mile 21 1/4. Then I hit the wall. I could feel it. Everything in my legs just drained out and within about 100 meters I was running way slower. Check out those last two splits, even with some downhill!

10 miles with a marathon-pace/tempo effort. In 1:15:39

The goal was to run 2 mile warmup, 6 miles at a light tempo, 2 mile cool down. However, the 5th mile is a fairly long, steep hill, and by the time I got to the top I was slower than 8, so I jogged the rest of that mile and called the run two long intervals - 4 miles and 2. I think that was a good adjustment, and it went well.

12 miles on Military Road to Interurban trail and back in 1:30:01 (7:30/mile)

Makeup for yesterday. The plan was to run the first 2 miles easy, then speed up to around 7:30 pace for 8-10 miles. My thinking here was, if I could run that pace easily for 10 miles I might be able to handle 7:40 in the marathon.

Felt good right off the start and just kept going. However, the uphills in the second half costed me and I ran out of gas in the 11th mile. Better to take a cool down mile anyways.

I'm pretty sure I could handle a 7:30 pace through 21-22 miles of the marathon. However, I don't want to race it and don't really want to hurt that much. 7:40 pace definitely seems reasonable for an easy-moderate effort.

Tacoma City Marathon in 3:33:32 (8:09/mile) (I should've run 1 second slower!)

I set a new slow for marathons. Not worried, though. I approached this race as just for fun. After a year of injured running, I was just glad to be able to run the full distance. The main reason for running was because my brother was in town from St. Louis for the marathon. Unfortunately, he beat me. My PR is 18 minutes faster than his, but not ready to race.

I kind of struggled with this concern in the weeks leading up to the race, but decided it wasn't worth the stress to try to beat him.

We ran together much of the race. It was a fun time just to be able to do that. My parents, wife and niece were at several places along the way to cheer for us.

During the race my main strategy was to run as slow on the uphills as felt comfortable - no pushing. Then on the flats and downhills I just coasted to catch back up with my brother.

The heat climbed throughout the day - hottest day of the year so far by about 10 degrees. The last few miles were pretty tough, but as tired and hot as my brother and I were, we still were passing other runners left and right, many of whom were walking.

All in all, I'm fine with the race. The course was not as easy and fast as advertised. It is a net downhill, but all of Tacoma is rolling hills, and there were a few pretty tough ones, too. The last mile was mostly uphill, but a 1/4 mile downhill into the finish. My legs didn't run out too badly, but when I tried to speed up those last couple miles my head got woozy, so I held back and slogged through.

You used my strategy on the hills, easy up and pick up the pace down. It really worked for me keeping my effort more consistent. Glad you were able to have fun . I hope your brother didn't give you too much "crap" about beating you. :-) Just tell him you have been feeling sorry for him all these years so you decided to let him win one. That should get him somewhat aggravated. :-)

I wish it wasn't as hard of an effort as it was to get under 7, but I'm glad I did it. Only on the uphills was I very tired. Even at the end, on the flat the pace was pretty comfortable. Compared to last week, this was harder effort, but quite a bit faster (28:41 vs 27:31). Still about 3 minutes off where I was last year in April, but oh well. Progress.

10 miles to Interurban trail and back in 1:18:02 ()

A little slower than I'd hoped overall. I also was hoping to get the run done before the rain started. No such luck. At about 4 1/2 miles it started. I was concerned about chafing so I took off my shirt. Ran about 2 1/2 miles like that, with people looking at me like I was nuts. A couple times I stopped under a tree for a bit to wait for a downpour to lighten up. The rain steadily worsened and I noticed I was just under the tip of a long, columnar black cloud that was slowing moving the same direction as me.

At one point, with about 3 miles to go I was standing under some trees. I heard a few rumblings of thunder. So, put the shirt back on and started off again. It was like a sheet of rain. If I had been running in the shower I would not have been any wetter. Yet it kept getting worse and worse. As a result, I ran pretty fast for a couple miles. Alll of a sudden it stopped, relatively speaking, and the last 2 miles were run in peace with just a few sprinkles.

2.1 miles on the trails in 17:04 (8:07/mile)

My pace is really dragging lately. My wife says she has way less energy, too, and a friend who is doing whole30 says she is having lots of headaches. I guess the body is adapting to getting less sugar and more complex foods. Hopefully that is why I'm running so slowly of late, but hopefully it won't last long as I have a faster-paced run tomorrow.

A few weeks ago I bumped up to 6 days a week and the knee didn't like it. So I backed down for a few. It occurred to me that I probably ran too far that 6th day. Usually when I add a new day I only do about 3 miles, especially when I haven't run 6 days in a row in more than a year (probably). So, I planned to do 3 today, but was just so tired I stopped at 2.1.

This run didn't work out very well. Still dealing with low energy, especially on hills. I seem to get out of breath easily. This was supposed to be a 9 mile "steady-state" run, around 7:15 pace. It went OK through 5 miles, but I pretty much ran out of gas on the 6th mile, which is all uphill. I even stopped a couple times to catch my breath. Managed to do OK on the 7th mile, but decided it was time to stop with the effort. After that I walked and jogged the last two miles. Next time I will choose a flatter course for my timed run.

I ran with my brother today, so the pace was quite a bit slower. Also, I slept late, so was only up for about 15 minutes before we headed out.

I love this trail. We ran through Sunriver for about 3 miles just to get to the trail, then the trail itself is 3.1 miles long. It meanders through a Ponderosa forest on a dirt path that is narrow enough we had to run single-file. Occassional bikes went through, but no other runners.

We were only going to run 12 miles, but when we got to 6 miles we were just 1/2 a mile from the falls, so we went on to at least see it. When we got back to Sunriver my brother thought we should go a different way back to the house, and this ended up being more than a mile longer.

On the run I tore up the backs of my heels pretty badly. My socks were too short, especially for a trail that was dusty and grainy. I could barely walk for the next two days and couldn't run again until Saturday.

Also on the way back, around mile 9, my foot caught a root and I fell flat. Most of the impact was in my chest, but my chin smacked the ground, too. Knocked the wind out of me. Since I was soaked with sweat, and I landed on a dusty trail, I was caked in mud the rest of the run. Thankfully, I had to scrapes or wounds, except on my chin, which was hidden by my new dirt beard. No after effects from the fall. Just those stupid heels.

It was warmer at the start, around 62, because it had been overcast all night. It stayed cloudy, though, so it never warmed up until after the run.

Just looked at the splits for the first time. I had no idea we were going that slowly. Well, my brother hadn't gone longer than 9 prior to this, and he is a bit slower than me. Also, we were at 4200' elevation.

4x100 strides

Workout

I was going to run this on the trails, but with the Garmin acting up I decided to use a course where I know the split marks. Garmin seemed to be just fine out in the open.

4x1/2 mile intervals with 1/2 mile jogs. 1 mile cool down.

This was just a first taste of some speed work. It's been a LONG time since I did any intervals. I took way too long of breaks between for a normal workout. Also, wasn't feeling too good before, during or after the run. Just feeling a little under the weather.

1/2 mile intervals: 3:15 - 3:10 - 3:05 - 3:20

That last one I goofed. The first 2/3 was uphill and I just sort of sluffed it. By the time I realized how slowly I was going it was too late to knock much time off it.

5K race at the WHS XC Alumni race in 20:03 (6:27/mile)

I didn't quite meet my time goal of sub 20, but that's OK. I met the most important goals, which were to have fun, and show the high school punks how to race hard.

I went out at a tempo run pace and held that for two miles, then picked it up over the last mile. During the first mile, I held back quite a bit. Here's a time where I might've been faster without the Garmin. I saw early on that I was running a 6:08 pace, when I wanted to run 6:25. So I eased up, and ended up with a 6:36. No biggy. I had started just behind the WHS 7th man, but so quickly moved up to behind their #4. Obviously these guys started out too quickly and soon fell into their slower pace.

That number 4 guy did a good job of holding me off. He was about 30 meters ahead of me at mile 1, and it took be to mile 2 to catch him (still running a tempo pace, though). As I closed in, he sped up. When I passed him, he passed me back shortly after that and we ran together for a bit longer. As we approached 2 1/2, I pointed out to him that we were reeling in the pair of WHS guys ahead of us. They had been way ahead, but were now only about 20m ahead. I told him we had to go after them, and then I went and he didn't.

I gradually gained on the pair, and caught them just as we hit the track with 300m to go. As I passed them on the corner, they both said "good job". I thought to myself, that's not what you say when someone passes you. So I got after them, told them to keep up, get going and not give up with only 300 to go. So, they both went with me. Over the last 100m one guy out kicked me while the other stayed behind me. I was proud of them both for taking me on, though if I hadnd't said anything I'm pretty sure I would've destroyed them both. Fun times.

It's been so long since I've truly raced, I forgot how much fun it is.

2 mile warmup, with 3 30 sec. strides in the last 1/2 mile.

Workout:

6x800 and 1x400 @ 5K pace, with 400m recoveries

I ran these on the road, so 1/2 mile intervals. I threw in the last 1/4 mile for good measure, just to make the hard part of the workout slightly longer than 5K. The plan was to run around 6:20, or maybe 6:15 pace for each of these, and looks like that was pretty reasonable.

1 - 3:07.9
2 - 3:09.7
3 - 3:08.3

5 - 3:05.5
6 - 3:08.6
6.5 - 1:24.4

I doubt I can right quite that fast for a 5K, but definitely faster than the 20:03 I ran at the alumni race.

Shorter miles for a couple of days, is everything okay?

From DLTheo on Thu, Oct 03, 2013 at 21:14:27 from 76.28.161.119

I'm not training for anything big, so I didn't see any reason to run in the pouring rain and thunderstorms. Plus I was busy over the weekend. The mileage for the week was one of my highest recently. See my more recent entries for this week. I've got a 5K on Saturday, so keeping the mileage lower this week.

I'm sure it's hard to push hard when there is no competition. I've never been there, still a 1st place is still 1st!

I wonder if setting your garmin to take measurements more often would help? Also I believe there are a couple of updates that might help.

Kind of a goofy race. Small, not much competition, very flat. We had to run an extra lap around the track at the beginning, and two laps at the end, to get the distance up to 5K. At least it turned out to really be 5K. Garmin said 3.11

Perfect, sunny morning, cold, though, around 45 degrees. My goal was to get out in 6:20, try to hold that through 2 miles, and then run around 6:10 the final mile. I didn't quite do that, but pretty close. AT least it was more even pacing than at the alumni race a couple weeks ago.

From DLTheo on Mon, Oct 07, 2013 at 12:04:29 from 155.130.107.20

The track part was kind of weird, but I'm sure it helped to run the last mile faster. If there had been a lot more runners it wouldn't have worked. Nobody on the track to cheer, really. Such a small race, and most of the runners were not anywhere near the track yet.

The last 2 or 3 miles I was getting pretty tired, though. I'm back to 14 feeling pretty long. The plan is to keep running 12-15 mile long runs through the end of the year, and then start prepping for a spring marathon.

I like these splits. Pretty nice and even, except the downhill/uphill at miles 7 and 8. Th second half was faster, too, even though I was getting more tired.

Easy 2 mile warmup in 15:52 (7:56/mile)

4x150m strides

4x 3/4 mile with .3 mile recoveries

I used the road loop around my building for these. It's a 1.05 mile loop, so works perfectly for 3/4 mile intervals. The first half of the run is a gradual uphill, and then the 2nd half is mostly a gradual downhill. Makes things interesting.

The plan was to run these progressively faster, starting with 6:20 pace and dropping 5 seconds per interval to finish with a 6:05 pace. That would mean 4:45, 4:41, 4:37, 4:34 approximately

1 - 4:43.2 (6:18)
2 - 4:44.7 (6:20, oops)
3 - 4:38.5 (6:11, back on pace)
4 - 4:29.9 (6:00)

The key take away from this workout - I have the strength to run these at this pace no problem. Speed is the limiting factor. I get below 6:15 pace and I'm running pretty poorly, even though it's not very tiring. I need to get in some speed work so the form falls into place.

I decided 3/4 mile of speedwork wasn't long enough, so I added on a short tempo run. The pace was a little fast since I really should be going 6:44/mile.

The left knee aggravated me during this run. That's a bit more troubling than the right one. Right knee pain is normal.

Really a challenging workout. I was still feeling a bit stiff and sore from the weekend activities and workouts, but decided to go ahead with the workout. The alternative of a casual 6 miles just wasn't inspiring enough to me.

My main goal was to get out quickly in the fist two intervals and get to the right pace on both of them. The last couple workouts and races I've lolly gagged along through the first couple miles before putting on the gas to try to catch up with a mad dash over the last mile.

1 - 4:40 (93 - 3:06 - 4:40)
2 - 4:41.5 (91 - 3:06 - 4:41)

Treadmill Alternative

Who needs a treadmill when you can run laps around a volleyball court? These folks were on safari in the Serenghetti and they weren't allowed to run beyond the boundaries of the camp due to all the man-eating wild animals that roamed freely in this area, so they ran their 8 mile runs around this little court.

Now that would be boring!

I see you dropped the pace pretty good on your last mile, you must be feeling pretty good!

From DLTheo on Thu, Oct 31, 2013 at 11:30:24 from 76.28.161.119

No doubt, but the constant danger of being eaten might add some excitement (and speed) to the run.

I threw in some strides in the last mile, so that's why it was faster.

Not feeling very energetic. Hams still quite sore and tight.

4 mile tempo run in 26:40 (6:40/mile)

Goal pace was 6:44, so I feel good about staying within 3-4 seconds. I ran on a loop course, instead of the usual out and back. Although its not flat, at least each mile is pretty close to the same. As a result, the fatiguing process is much more gradual than on my usual route. I felt pretty good and strong until the last mile when even the downhill was tiring.

Tempo runs are supposed to be between 15K and 1/2 marathon pace. Today I think I could've managed 6:40 pace for 15K, but probably not for 1/2 marathon.

I picked it up on the last mile (downhill) before the turn around so that the two miles would average to around the 7:45 I had been running prior to that. Didn't expect the uphill mile to be under 8 and not feel difficult at all. I guess I am getting some hill fitness, too.

I haven't run this course since September 2012. Although this was my fastest time down and up, it wasn't anything to write home about. The best thing, though, was that I wasn't too out of breath at the top this time, whereas last year I would get to the top gasping for air. Also, I recovered and felt fine the rest of the run today. On the downside, my legs were actually sore for a couple days after this one.

From DLTheo on Fri, Nov 22, 2013 at 10:03:41 from 76.28.161.119

No turkey for me. Top winner was only 4 seconds off his predicted time, so 49 seconds is pretty bad. That's ok. Last time I did one of these I did win a turkey and we never ate it

1.4 mile warmup with a couple strides in 10:51 (7:45/mile)

5K race in 19:33 (6:19/mile)

This race was too painful for not enough payout. Just a couple seconds faster than I ran almost 2 months ago. I went out a little too fast and was really hurting by 1 mile. In the second mile I worked on closing the gap on Allen Culp. As I was coming up on him we started running up a hill. I didn't know there were any hills on this course, but I was already pretty close to the red line before it. Once we started up the hill I just backed off. So did Allen and the guy behind me. Once we topped the hill there was a downhill, so I recovered pretty quickly and got to the 2 mile mark in horrible time.

The last mile was basically just a run around the lake, very flat. I passed Allen just before the 2 mile mark and passed the next guy just as we got to the lake. There was nobody left ahead of me for a long ways. I could just see the next guy sometimes, but only when the path was long and straight. I cut the gap on him by about half before the finish, and the 3rd mile was decent.

The positives were that the first and last miles were faster than I ran in October. The downer was the 2nd mile was really slow. If not for the hill I would've been another 10 seconds or so faster.

Splits:
1 - 6:13.9
